Co-evolution between self and collective

Dynamic evolution implies a co-evolutionary relationship between the two ends of a feedback system, as each is interdependent through the shared “target” that exists as a public (collective-scope) aspect of the self. This target, whether conceptual, structural, or behavioral, represents an emergent collective pattern shaped by the many individual instances contributing to it. The self, as an autonomous holon, directs itself towards this evolving target, continuously adjusting its behavior in response to its perception of the collective state. Conversely, the collective state is shaped by the aggregated behaviors and selections of individual holons, meaning that each agent’s private actions ultimately contribute to the very public structure it orients itself toward. This reciprocal dynamic forms a co-evolutionary loop, where variation and selection are not isolated, but mutually informed: the self-assertive behavior of individuals refines the collective pattern, while the integrative behavior of the collective refines the available pathways for individual adaptation

In the 4QX model there are two such co-evolutionary feedback loops which are formed from the diagonal quadrant connections. We call the loop connecting the bottom-left to the top-right the organisational loop and that connecting the bottom-right to the top-left the activity loop.
